At John Laughter Jewelry, not only are we proud to appraise, buy, and sell some of the highest quality jewelry on the market, we also want to help you enjoy your existing jewelry, as well! As Western North Carolina's largest estate buyer coupled with our years of experience appraising diamonds and other precious jewelry, we have a lot of experience working with and cleaning jewelry – and trust us, it's not as difficult as you might think. In fact, cleaning your jewelry is easy, and it doesn't require anything besides what you'd find normally lying around the house.
Making Silver Shine
Silver is gorgeous when it shines, but tarnish sets in quickly. For pieces that are just dull or only beginning to tarnish, mix a few drops of dish soap with water and wash the piece with a cloth, rinse it clean, and then buff it with a cloth until it's dry. For heavier cases of tarnish, use a paste of three parts baking soda to one part water, rub the paste in with a lint-free cloth, rinse it off, and buff the piece dry.
Keeping Gold & Gems Glittering
To clean gold or jewelry with gemstones, mix a few drops of mild dish soap into a bowl of sodium-free seltzer water or club soda, then let them soak for five minutes. Swish the solution around, using a soft-bristle toothbrush to go over the finer crevices and settings of the jewelry. Once finished, rinse the pieces clean, pat them dry, and then leave them upside down to completely dry, preventing water from seeping into the settings of the stones.
