Diamonds - Cut

The beauty of a diamond comes 100% from the cut of the stone. Often cut is taken as the shape of the diamond, but shape is another topic. Take black diamonds for example, you cant see in them yet they sparkle and shine. Back in the early 1920's an optician came up with a formula for how light performs when it enters a diamond. Over the last 90 years, technology has been catching up with this mans math. When light enters a diamond, it bounces off the facets, or flat parts like mirrors and comes out the top of the diamond. Diamonds are pretty unique when it comes to gems, it has whats called diffusion. That is where normal white light is broken apart and turns into the 7 colors of the rainbow. The better a diamond is cut, the more diffusion which means more sparkle and color come out of the diamond.

Cut is art, science yes, but art to perfection. Gem labs try to make cut fit into a classification, like "ideal" or "good" or "000". What they are referencing is not the beauty of a diamond or how pretty it looks, but what the proportions of the table and depth ratios are. Using "cut grade" to say this is the prettiest diamond you can buy, is one of the oldest tricks in the book. A very old trick by new companies, used to sell a sub-standard diamond at a higher price hoping you wont know the difference. This all sounds very complicated so we created a chart to quickly and easily show the difference between three 1 carat diamonds.

Diamond Cuts

Each one of the diamonds above have "excellent" proportions and would receive a top "grade" from labs. Im sure its quite easy to see that one is really fat, one is really skinny, and one is just right. Outside of the fairytale reference, its easy to see how reading a grade from a piece of paper in no way tells you how pretty a diamond is.

The Grant Laughter Diamond is not only selected from the most appealing cut, but also for its performance. All of the diamonds in the chart below reference the diamond on the right, the best performing and visually appealing piece of art. Grant Laughter Jewelry doesn't expect you to know whether you want a 39.7% pavilion angle or a 42% pavilion angle, but we do help you find which one is the best representation of your love.

Diamond Proportions

The cut of a diamond means the difference between a dull and lifeless diamond and a brilliant diamond in the shadows, and in the fancy diamond lights. There can be a 50% price difference between two diamonds when the other 3 C's are exactly the same, but one diamond has a better cut. Once someone understands how cut is not just a formula, they can start to see why diamonds can seem to be cheaper online. When you don't have the opportunity to physically see the two diamonds perform next to each other, outside of the expensive diamond lights its impossible to make and informed decision on the beauty of a diamond.

The Grant Laughter Diamond is hand selected, from the worldwide inventory of diamonds for its beauty and optical performance.
